How to become a network engineer, and where the CCNA fits in

To become a network engineer you stack three layers: the education employers screen for, hands-on hours with switches and routers, and a vendor credential such as the CCNA that shows you can run Cisco IOS. The CCNA sits on top of that base and has no formal prerequisites of its own; the route below shows the order the layers usually go in and where each one leads.

Where the job title sits on the map

“Network engineer” is a job title, and employers draw its borders differently. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) publishes data by occupation instead, and two of its occupations cover the work: network and computer systems administrators (SOC 15-1244), who install, configure and keep networks running, and computer network architects (SOC 15-1241), who design them. Job ads labeled “network engineer” land on either side of that line.

The entry seats sit one step below both: help desk, network operations center (NOC) technician and junior network administrator. A common route runs through one of them first, working tickets, outages and change windows, before the engineer title.

The route, layer by layer

  1. Build the education layer

BLS lists a bachelor’s degree as the typical entry-level education for network and computer systems administrators (BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook). A computing degree is the usual base, and the steps below build on it rather than replace it.

  2. Put hours into a lab

Cisco recommends lab practice with Packet Tracer or Cisco Modeling Labs, and says of CML that “you can get started for free” (Cisco CCNA exam page). Build two switches and a router, then add VLANs, a trunk and a routed link one at a time.

  3. Earn the CCNA

One exam, 200-301: 120 minutes, US$300 plus tax, with local pricing varying (Cisco). The study guide maps its blueprint; how hard the CCNA is depends mostly on how much subnetting and CLI time you bring to it.

  4. Take the first networking seat

Help desk, NOC or junior admin. BLS notes that employers may require administrators to be certified in the products they use, which is where a vendor credential earns its place on a resume.

  5. Climb toward design

BLS lists five years or more in a related occupation for computer network architects. The Cisco certification path continues to CCNP and CCIE for engineers who stay on Cisco gear.

Where the CCNA fits, and its limits

The CCNA is a vendor credential: it proves Cisco IOS configuration and troubleshooting across Cisco’s six blueprint domains, from addressing to automation. Cisco’s own FAQ says the CCNA “is not equivalent to an academic degree” (Cisco CCNA certification page), and the BLS text on certification does not name Cisco at all (BLS). Read it as a layer on the education base.

The neighboring choice is CompTIA Network+, which is vendor-neutral; CCNA vs Network+ lays the two side by side. Cloud networking credentials from AWS and Microsoft Azure assume routing and addressing are second nature, so a common route takes them after the associate level.

When the route stalls

Months of study followed by a run of rejections is a hard stretch to sit through. Entry-level ads often ask for experience the entry level cannot have yet; read that wish list as a filter, one that some hiring managers relax for a candidate who can talk through a VLAN fault or a missing route.

So keep the lab running between applications. Write up each fault you fix (symptom, show command, cause, fix) and bring two of those write-ups to interviews. A stalled week in the job search is a good week to sit a practice set and find the study area that still leaks.

Questions on the route

Do I need a degree to become a network engineer?

BLS lists a bachelor’s degree as the typical entry-level education for network and computer systems administrators (BLS). Some employers hire on experience and certifications; a CCNA does not stand in for the degree, per Cisco’s FAQ.

What does BLS say about certifications for this work?

One line: employers may require administrators to be certified in the products they use. On Cisco networks, that points to the CCNA.

How does a network administrator differ from a network architect?

In BLS terms, administrators keep networks running and architects design them. Both list a bachelor’s degree; architects also list five years or more of related work.

Which first job leads toward network engineering?

A common route starts in help desk, NOC technician or junior administrator work, where you handle real outages and changes while you study. The CCNA study plan fits around a full-time seat.
